This translation report is extracted from the book The Imperial College Lectures in Petroleum Engineering volume 1: An Introduction to Petroleum Geoscience,the translator chooses the fourth chapter Petroleum System Analysis.This topic covers the fundamentals of the Earth sciences and examines their role in controlling the global occurrence and distribution of oil and gas resources.It also explains the principles,practices and the terminology associated with the upstream sector(exploration and production activities)of the oil industry.This topic belongs to Petroleum Technical English,which is known for its specialized contents,standardized and accurate language.The translator hopes to learn the characteristics of petroleum technical English,and grasp the translation principles and techniques through this translation practice.Under the guidance of skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of the Skopos Theory,this paper analyses the translation techniques of petroleum technical terminology and syntax.Meanwhile,with the continuous development of the petroleum industry,the research on related disciplines at home and abroad has been continuously deepened,it is necessary to learn more specific knowledge from foreign experts.the translator hopes to build a bridge for building outstanding teaching resources by translating the source text.This translation report is divided into four chapters: The first chapter mainly describes the content of the task,translation purpose and significance.The second chapter is a summary of the translation process,covering preparation of translation strategies and translation tools,and lists the problems to be solved.The third chapter focuses on the Skopos Theory,case analysis on the lexical and syntactical aspects.Chapter Four,difficulties and shortages during the translation process are summarized.
