Semantic Satiation Effect In Mongolian-Chinese Bilinguals

Semantic satiation refers to the phenomenon that people's processing efficiency of the word and its related information is reduced when processing a certain word for a long time or a plurality of times.Since Lambert and Jakobovits first named this phenomenon,many researchers have developed different experimental paradigms to explore the essence of semantic satiation.At present,there are three theoretical arguments about the stage of this phenomenon: the semantic processing stage,the perceptual processing stage,and the perceptual representation-semantic connection stage.This paper uses category membership decision to explore the occurrence of semantic satiation by examining the semantic saturation effects of Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals within and cross languages.In study 1,from the perspective of within language,three experiments 2(repeatability: high repetition vs low repetition)× 2(matching degree: member vs nonmember)within-subjects design was carried out to examine the semantic satiation effects of Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals of different proficiency levels.The results show that when the satiated Mongolian category words and sample words are Mongolian,the main effects of Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals are significant,the main effects of member degree are significant,the interactions are significant,and the difference in repeatability is significant under the member conditions,and the difference in lower repetition was not significant,showing the semantic saturation effect.When the condition of the satiated Chinese category words and exemplar are Chinese,the results of Mongolian-Chinese proficient bilinguals showed similar semantic satiation effect as their mother tongue.The non-proficient Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals were significantly faster than low repetition under member conditions,showing a priming effect.In study 2,from a cross-language perspective,four experiments 2(repeatability: high repetition vs low repetition)× 2(matching degree:member vs nonmember)within-subjects design was carried out to examine whether Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals with different proficiency will produce cross-linguistic semantic satiation effects.The results show that when the satiated Mongolian category words and sample words are Mongolian,and the satiated Chinese category words and exemplar are Chinese,the Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals all have semantic satiation effect,and the different proficiency bilinguals use translation strategies to complete category membership decision at the cost of reaction time.Non-proficiency bilinguals have to pay a greater reaction cost in the face of reaction conflicts.This study has the following conclusions:(1)There are semantic satiation effects in Mongolian and Chinese proficient bilinguals under the conditions of mother tongue and second language.(2)The cross-language semantic satiation effects of Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals support the theory that semantic satiation occurs at the semantic stage.(3)Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals with different proficiency in second language have different influences:On the semantic satiation to complete category membership decision at within and between languages: the proficient Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals show semantic satiation effects in within language and between languages;non-proficiency bilinguals have a priming effect within the language and a semantic satiation effect cross the languages.
