The present paper is a report on the translation of the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Dr Johnson and Mr Savage from English to Chinese,which totally amount over 12,220 words.Dr Johnson and Mr Savage,written by English biographer Richard Holmes and published in 1993,explores the enigmatic friendship between famous Samuel Johnson and the obscure poet Richard Savage,utterly demolishing James Boswell's portrait of Samuel Johnson as a clubbable sage and oracle in his great work Life of Johnson.This whole biography,with plenty of textual materials,is narrated objectively,simply and vividly.This report,analyzing the problems occurred in the translation process from the perspective of stylistics,includes four parts: the first part briefs necessary information about the biography and analyzes its language style;the second part explains main analytical methods of stylistics and why they are used in this report;the third part gives specific cases observed from the perspective of stylistics;and the fourth part summarizes the other troubles and what the author has learned about stylistics and literary translation in the process of translation.
