The source text of the translation report is selected from Samuel Johnson,a biography,written by Sir Leslie Stephen.',who is known as a British biographer,critic and scholar.The biography makes main introduction about Samuel Johnson in terms of three parts:childhood and youth,literary career and friends.For this translation text,the first chapter and the second one are excerpts from Samuel Johnson.There are so many anecdotes of Johnson in two chapters,including domestic misfortune,quirky personality,learning at Oxford University and working as a translation in Grub Street for daily necessity.In the biography,the most striking writing style is narration,with some literary techniques.The text describes successfully particularly in figure description.Some words,however,are so old-fashioned and abstract that reader today cannot understand it easily.Hence,we need to search much information,ensuring that relevant background knowledge is sufficient for understanding the source text.In addition,the attributive clauses and long sentences are in the majority,and the sentence structures are complex.In order to address these challenges in the process of translation,the translator will combine Nida's “functional equivalence” theory to analyze relevant phenomenon at lexical and syntactical levels.At the lexical level,the translator will adopt the strategies of conversion and amplification,while at the sentence level,the translator will use the strategies of diversion and conversion to deal with attributive clauses.In summary,all these efforts aim to ensure that target language is faithful and smooth enough to cater to taste of Chinese readers.
