This practice report is based on the translation of The Mantle of Command: FDR at War,1941–1942.The Mantle of Command is a biography of American former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The book reveals Roosevelt's evolution from noncombatant supporter to the commander in chief. There are plenty of historical facts and military terms in the source text. The report discusses the identification and the classification of military terms in the source text. Those military terms were divided into two categories: specialized military terms and common words. The second type was further divided into: common words with military meaning and common words without military meaning. After identification and classification of military terms, the terms were translated under the guidance of Skopos theory. Some translation methods were proposed for the translation of different kinds of military terms.Literal translation and notes were used in the translation of specialized military terms. In dealing with common words with military meaning, the main translation method was literal translation.Other methods such as addition and combination were also used.To translate common words without military meaning, their military collocation words were taken into consideration.Paraphrase was used to translate this kind of term into Chinese military terms.
