A Report On The E-C Translation Of How To Speak Money From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

Finance has already penetrated into every field of modern economic life and is becoming even closer to the public.In this situation,the public must be initiative to learn financial knowledge to improve the ability to prevent financial risks and build a more stable financial future for themselves and their families.The classic foreign financial books,which work well as a reference for the public in China,are of great significance to be translated into Chinese.In this case,it is absolutely necessary to carry out the translation studies in this field.How to Speak Money is the other financial book,written by famous writer and New Yorker and the New York Review’s columnist John Lanchester.Written in a plain and humorous language and the form of a dictionary,the book reveals exactly how the financial world works.The translation study is carried out based on the author’s English-Chinese translation of the first part and the second part of the book.In a due consideration to the type of the source text,the intended audience and the purpose of the translation,the thesis studies the translation of the source text in terms of syntax,discourse,and rhetoric according to communicative translation,aiming to provide the most appropriate translation strategies or methods for the English-Chinese translation of financial texts.More specifically,the thesis mainly discusses the following three aspects:the translation of long sentences and passive voice sentences;the dealing of discourse cohesion;the translation of metaphors,hyperbole and slang.After analyzing a number of specific cases,the main conclusions of the thesis are as follows: For long sentences and passive voice sentences in the financial text,in orderto make the translation accord with the expression of Chinese habit,sequential translation,reverse translation,division,conversion and inserting are adopted;at the discourse level,the technique of amplification,explanation and conversion are always desirable;for metaphors,hyperbole and slang at the rhetorical level,in order to ensure that Chinese readers can have the same reading experience as the original readers,the methods of literal translation,free translation,and loan translation are mainly adopted.This thesis not only contributes to promoting the translation quality of financial text,but also helps to supplement and improve the translation studies on financial text.
