Women's marriage problems had been studied by Mao Zedong in early days who is the leader and advocator of marriage system reform in new China. The paper attempts to explain Mao Zedong's thought on marriage from the vertical and horizontal perspective so to achieve an overall grasp of Mao Zedong's thought on women's marriage. From the vertical prospect, a more systematic understanding of Mao Zedong's thought on women's marriage will be acquired through the interpretation of the development and change of his thought on marriage in different periods of time. From the horizontal perspective, the positive connotation of Mao Zedong's thought on women's marriage will be revealed though an overall discussion of its premise, principle, realistic foundation, institutional guarantee. Mao Zedong's thought on women's marriage is a combination of Marxism marriage theory and Chinese concrete condition. It is a thought theory based on the equality of men and women, the freedom of marriage, women's economic independence and the legal protection as systematic warrant. Nowadays, It still makes a difference on the theory and practice of women's liberation which is mainly embodied in such prospects as the enrichment and development of women's liberation theory with Chinese characteristics, the almost realization of women's liberation in marriage, the deepening and popularization of the concept of marriage freedom, the improvement of women's status in marriage as well as the formulation and implementation of Marriage Law. Mao Zedong's thought on women's marriage bears profound implications on contemporary women's strengthening of subject consciousness, realization of economic independence, and the maintaining of a harmonious marriage in accordance with both law and virtue.
