The thesis intends to contribute to the discussion on the influence of Chinese development model in Africa, particularly to Ethiopia's contemporary developmental state notion. It is aimed at providing an explanation of the Chinese political engagement in African politics in general,on Ethiopia in particular, viewed from the vintage point of development state model and Neo-liberal theories, which China and Ethiopia are believed to have been following. The developmental model is also believed to offer some general solutions to the underdeveloped countries in systematic transformation;this is true in light of current politico-economic underpinnings on Ethiopian Political landscape. This thesis argues that the Chinese developmental model influence contemporary African politics in general and Ethiopian developmental state model in particular. In light of this, the researcher intends to look at,how China is involved and play a role in African politics in light of promoting mutual benefit, instead of its own economic and resource diplomacy alone. The role of China in Africa must be understood in the context of competing and intensified global energy politics,in which the western are among the key players vying for security of supply.Contrary to popular representation,China's role in Africa is much more than this however, opening up new choices for African political, economic and social development for the first time since the neo liberal turn of the 1980s.It also forces us to consider Chinese involvement in Africa as ambivalent but contextual. Here we look at the political dimensions of this engagement and set out a discussion agenda that focus on the infulence of the Chinese developmental model in Africa.China and Ethiopian have gradually formed close relations. On both sides, the establishment of this partnership was motivated as much by diplomatic, strategic and even ideological consideration.Trade cooperation with Addis Ababa is a means rather than an end in itself. For Ethiopia however, partnership with China mainly serves the international political and economic purposes of the ruling party that has been in place since 1991,under the Ethiopian People's Republic democratic front(EPRDF).The relationship is characteristics of special but asymmetrical links China has sought to establish with countries of Africa that are strategically important. This research provides a new perspective about Sino-Africa and Sino-Ethiopia relationship. This will be a qualitative research project. The qualitative method will be integral to the study as efforts have been made to plan out to research process. Each chapter has tried to show to develop China's political engagement devloped in Africa through time. The conceptual frame work split into two basic political theories such as Developmental state model and Neo-liberal models. The rest of the paper discusses Chinese development model,African and Ethiopian developmental state model and the influence and challenges of Chinese development model in African politics. At last the final chapter encompasses the findings and conclusion.
