Research On The Living State Of Qingtian Overseas Chinese During The Period Of The Republic Of China

During the period of the Republic of China,so many Qingtian people went to Europe to earn a living that they became a synonym for Chinese in Europe.Most of them started from small businesses and the rest worked for others.Their occupations turned to be multiple and high-level as a result of the accumulation of money and experience.Their careers were tightly related to current European situations and the policies of Chinese and European governments.Qiantian vendors in Europe which was considered as a disgrace to the nation by Chinese government and a violation of laws by European government,so their businesses were limited and forbidden strictly.Under the criticism of Chinese countrymen,the supervision of policemen and the background of financial crisis as well as the second World War,Qingtian Overseas Chinese struggled to make a living in Europe.Based on the historical archives,newspapers,magazines,local chronicles and oral historical materials,this article studies the origin and development of Qingtian Overseas Chinese and their employment status in different time,public opinions and the policies of government as well as the influence of Anti-Japanese War to them.The paper analyzes Qingtian Overseas Chinese in the view of the history of Chinese overseas immigration and ends by comparing them with Tianmen and Guangdong Overseas Chinese in Europe of the same period,giving prominence to their unique characters.
