The word "freedom" is different in the process of human social development. However, the vast majority of scholars, intellectuals insist that human history is nothing more than the continuous progress of freedom consciousness.Of course,in different contexts, the connotation of freedom is not the same.Since the revival of the European Renaissance, freedom has become a topic of particular concern to the intellectual community as the awakening of the subjective consciousness of the people, and in the first place established the capitalist mode of production, the British revolution which has completed the industrial revolution has achieved fruitful results.Among them,John Mill’s achievements are particularly prominent.Mill as a landmark in the history of nineteenth century liberalism, its free source of thought not only by the family’s infection, the enlightenment of the older generation and the influence of peers, but also the theoretical summary of the British social development.By taking the classical socialism as the core of the free thought, and at the same time,he jumped out of the political freedom. At the same time,On the basis of personal and social boundaries, from the new perspective of social freedom to re-structure the basic principles of freedom. He calls for freedom of the individual, exposing political freedom to social freedom, and bringing free thought into a new stage of development. At the same time,he cleverly combines liberalism and utilitarianism, from the utilitarian point of view, the free thought to re-study,no longer that freedom is the natural rights of man, advocate the government’s limited intervention,so as to provide free thinking A more realistic basis. At the same time,Mill saw the negative impact of the European Revolution, saw the democratic era of the greatest threat to freedom is the social authority,so in the history of liberalism for the first time put forward social freedom. It starts from the relationship between the individual and the society, explains in detail the nature and limit of the law that the society can legally applied to the individual, and expounds the free thought systematically. At present, there are all kinds of liberalism in society, some of which are some extreme knowledge. Therefore, the study of Mill’s free thought not only helps us to clarify the historical process of the emergence and development of liberalism,it forms a basic understanding of the true meaning of freedom, but also has a very important guiding significance for us to actively practice the socialist core values. For the realization of Marx said that "free man" to provide a strong intellectual support and ideological protection.
