Public Square Dancing Disturbing Local Residents

In recent years,public square dancing disturbing local residents has become a hot issue of social concern.This phenomenon is mostly conducted attribution analysis and governance exploration from two dimensions of morality and urban management in existing research.However,these views can't fully explain its occurance.Based on experience observation and theory investigation,this study puts forward research hypothesis from the perspective of social stratification: the conflicts caused by public square dancing are in essence the collision of consumption and lifestyles between different classes.This study verifies the hypothesis through literature research,field work and other research methods.The main findings are as follows.Firstly,public square dancingshows obvious features of social stratum.This kind of dance is characterized by easy mastering and low cost with feature of collectivism,showing a typical cultural entertainment of social common people.Under the background of increasingly obvioussocial differentiation and expanding middle class,public square dancing has significant difference with the consumption demand and cultural way of life of other social strata like middle class.Secondly,for the obvious stratum characteristic of public square dancing,such conflict occurs more in urban than rural areas from the aspect of space.The reason is that urban social strata are more pluralisticwith significant heterogeneity where consumption and lifestyles of different social strata are prone to clashes.And in the urban area,those conflicts are more concentrated in the community space with salient stratum heterogeneity and less emerges in the space with strong stratum homogeneity like high-grade,outmoded ommunities and residential quarter of work unit,which is closely ascribed to the differentiation of social class.Thirdly,from the longitudinal angle of history,public square dancing exists in various historical periods of new China.However,in the period of “destratification”,public square dancing served as collective lifestyle of social members,generally accepted by social members and playing its role of uniting members.But with the increasingly obvious differentiation of social strata,the lifestyles and cultural values of different social strata have come into being.That public square dancing is only a cultural entertainment of ordinary social class proves to be the root cause of such conflicts.The above findings show that since the reform and opening up in 1978,the differentiation of China's social class began to further advance in the dimensions of consumption and cultural life after experiencing the differentiation of professional and objective status.This kind of social differentiation from objective to subjective and from material to spiritual is an important aspect of current and future social governance.Specific to the governance of the conflicts caused by public square dancing,this study mainly suggests that the management to such conflict needs to face cultural and interests conflicts from different social strata.Both sides of the conflict concerning public square dancing have wide mass base.As a result,government should conduct in line with the principle of respecting the collective life of different social strata;separate the cultural and interests clashes with various means and methods;at the same time focus on the development,cultivation and production of alternative cultural entertainment so as to effectively inhibit space with potential conflicts.
