This thesis investigates the effects of no gloss and English multiple-choice gloss on high school students'reading comprehension across narrative text and expository text based on the Comprehensive Input Theory and Psychological Models of Text Comprehension. So far, given the lack of studies examining the effects of gloss types on high school students'reading comprehension, and taking different text types into consideration are even rare, so it's necessary to carry out this present study. The participants in this study are 60 high school students partly from two classes of Grade One in No.41 Middle School in Nanning. The study consists of two experimental groups, namely, narrative text and expository text with no gloss, narrative text and expository text with English multiple-choice gloss. SPSS Statistics is used to analyze the collecting data, and the main findings in the present study are following:1) Comparison of NG and MCG on reading comprehension in narrative text, MCG group yielded the higher effect on participants'comprehension in the narrative text than NG group. In other words, MCG facilitated participants'reading comprehension more in the narrative text.2)When comparing the effects of NG and MCG on reading comprehension in expository text, MCG group obtained the higher mean score on the comprehension test in the expository text than NG group. That is, in the expository text, MCG facilitated participants'reading comprehension more.3) In the condition of the same gloss type (MCG) and the same participants, comparing of the effects of MCG on reading comprehension across narrative text and expository text, participants did better in narrative text. The findings in this study indicate that the usage of MCG can promote high school students' reading comprehension both in narrative text and expository text, and the effect on narrative text is superior over expository text. It sheds some light on the textual glosses, text types, and reading comprehension,in addition it provides some pedagogical implications in reading comprehension teaching and teaching materials designing.
