Textbooks provide the essential clues for teachers to carry out the classroom teaching.Besides, textbooks offer important sources for students to acquire knowledge of all subjects. As a variety of English textbooks spring up in the market,it is critically important to analyze and evaluate textbooks scientifically and objectively. The study of this thesis is taking the new and the old editions of Ren’ai(Project English)Junior English Teaching Materials—Grade 9 as an example, analyzing both editions deeply, internally and externally.Firstly, taking the English Curriculum Standard 2011 as the basis of analysis, the internal evaluation and comparison are carried out from language knowledge, language skills, emotional attitude, learning strategies and culture awareness.Secondly, the thesis makes a comparative study on the general overview, the structure and the content between these two editions of textbooks.Thirdly, the external evaluation which aims to investigate the application of the new edition of Project English of Grade 9 adopts questionnaire and the analysis about relevant data is made by Excel 2010 software. The findings of the research show that the new edition of Project English Book 9 not only inherits many advantages of the old one,but also adheres to the instructions of the English Curriculum Standard 2011 more closely. The new edition takes on some characteristics: the design of the structure is more scientific and compact;the teaching content is colourful and more diversified;the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing are intensified;the autonomy and learning strategy ability are focused;the topics of the dialogues are closely related to the students’ daily life. However, some disadvantages have also been found in the research: the design of the activities, contents and the learning methods are far from integrated;some reading materials are outdated;the vocabulary are excessive;language exercises are inadequate and the organization of language points are unscientific.
