Writing which belongs to the output language is the highest requirement in the process of language learning.How to use writing strategy effectively is one of the most important factors that affect students' writing ability.Since there are so many differences between English and Chinese in pronunciation,grammar,syntax and expressions,students always come across some ambiguous situation.So how to deal with this ambiguous situation is another important factor that affects students' writing ability.So,dealing with this ambiguous situation properly is quite important.In recent years,a large number of studies showed that the tolerance of ambiguity and English writing has a significant correlation.This research aims to present the general situation of students' tolerance of ambiguity in Suichuan senior high school,to explore the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and high school students' English writing strategies as well as the differences between students with different gender and different level of TOA in choosing writing strategy and to help senior English teachers understand the senior students' TOA of linguistic phenomenon and the choice of writing strategy.This study chooses the English tolerance of ambiguity scales and senior English Writing Strategy Scale as research tools to investigate 137 students in Suichuan senior high school.With the help of SPSS statistical software,description analysis,independent sample T-test,ANOVA statistical method,multiple comparison and Pearson correlation test are used to explore the relationship between variables.This research confirms that:(1)most of the senior high school students in English writing are with moderate tolerance of ambiguity,only a few students are with very high and very low TOA level.There is very little difference between male and female students on the level of TOA,male students' level of TOA is a little higher than female students.(2)In senior English writing process,students usually use metacognitive strategy and affective strategy,and they use cognitive strategy and compensation strategy occasionally.As for different gender,the female group uses writing strategy more frequently than male group.Male and female students showed significant differences in the use ofcompensation strategy and metacognitive strategy.(3)Tolerance of Ambiguity and English Writing Strategy has a significant positive correlation,which indicates that the level of ambiguity tolerance determines learners' choosing of writing strategies.Students with high TOA choose metacongnitive strategy more frequently,while students with moderate TOA tends to use compensation strategy and affective strategy.And low TOA students would like to use all kinds of strategies,except for metacognitive strategy.Therefore,teachers should realize the importance of tolerance of ambiguity in English writing teaching.What's more,teachers should learn the theory of TOA and design some writing strategy training activities according to students' tolerance of ambiguity level so that students can more rationally and effectively use the writing strategies.
