To a certain extent, President is the soul of university. Ashby once said: "university's rise and decline depends on its internal control." To solve the deep-rooted disease such as administration of university and official standard of president for a long time, adapting to the requirements under new situation such as economic globalization, the popularization of higher education, de-administration of modern university system and socialist market economy, and perfecting the President's responsibility system under leadership of the party committee, professionalization of university President is the wave of the future. Professionalization of university President is by establishing of open qualification selection criteria of President, diversified competition mechanism, standardized and institutionalized evaluation mechanism, stable tenure and exit mechanism to make sure the President become a professional administrator, realizing professional management and promoting President's professionalization.Based on existing research, this paper reviewed the historical evolution of university President and made a systematic classification. Since ancient times to reform and opening up, until now the President of university has experienced a development history from "officials", scholars and politicians to a multiple role, different roles of President successively appeared including academic symbol type, teaching and administrative type, university affairs administration type, based on which summarized the influence factors of President's role. Through analysis of the quality structure of university President, putting forward that university President's core role is "professional administrator" under the trend of professionalization. Firstly, as a professional administrator, President of university is an educator who understands the law of education; secondly, as a professional talent, President of university is supposed to be an administrator. At present, the President's role needs to be transformed, in the process there would be problems such as role of pluralism and role conflict, through analysis of the causes, putting forward the realistic approach to construct university President's role: namely by providing President of university more opportunities for role cognition, promoting empathy of role and specification of the role's behavior these three aspects to improve university Presidents role playing ability, by professional learning and regular examination to improve President's role of adaptability; In terms of implementation path, from aspects such as completing selection process and selection standard of President, stabilizing President's tenure, rationalization of role evaluation, establishing professional exit mechanism and university's streamline administration and institute decentralization to provide assurance for the character construction of university President.This thesis is based on a large number of existing research, mainly take the president as main study object, using interviews, literature analysis and comparative method to make an overall investigation for the University president's role and its realization mechanism. In this study, we hope to show the role of the university president in this group as detailed as possible, through careful study to provide reference for the role orientation mechanism.
