Reading is one of the most important ways to grasp linguistic knowledge,obtain the information and improve language using abilities for students,and it is also an important aspect of language communication.Most English teachers of senior high schools have long realized the importance of the reading teaching and regarded improving students' competence of reading comprehension as one of the important aims in senior secondary education.However,most teachers only disintegrate and pick out the linguistic knowledge points of the reading materials,which can not effectively improve students' reading abilities.So it is necessary for English teachers to explore a more effective teaching model.Genre-based Teaching Approach was first used in the 1990 s.Based on the theory of genre and generic analysis,it is generally considered as an effective teaching method.The aims of applying it into English reading teaching are first helping students know and master the textual features,text structure,linguistic features and communicative purposes of various genres,then developing their genre awareness and finally improving students' communicative competence and reading ability.Based on the theory of genre and generic analysis,this study explores on applying Genre-based Teaching Approach to senior high school English reading teaching and develops teaching procedures applying to reading class.It aims to discuss the effectiveness of Genre-based Teaching Approach on improving students' English reading comprehension ability and impacts of Genre-based Teaching Approach on their reading habits and reading interest.The study chooses 95 students from two classes of a senior high school in Dalian as the subjects and lasts four months.The questionnaire surveys,interview,reading comprehension tests and classroom observation are employed as instruments for data collection.SPSS software is used to analyze the data from reading comprehension tests.The research results suggest that by using Genre-based Teaching Approach teachers can improve students' reading comprehension ability and help them read more effectively,which makes them quickly grasp the main ideas and understand the text profoundly.And at the same time,Genre-based Teaching Approach can also help students form good reading habits and greatly increase students' reading interest.
