Vocabulary is the building materials of the language.Any language skills cannot exist independently without lexical elements.Students' mastery of the English vocabulary has a direct impact on their English proficiency.The issue of Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard put forward higher requirements for English teaching in 2011.And then the author tries to introduce sandwich story methodology into English vocabulary teaching in low segment of elementary school with the aims of improving the effectiveness of English vocabulary teaching.In order to find an English teaching method suitable for China's national conditions,Professor Ji Yuhua of Xiamen University developed the sandwich English teaching method,which teaches students English by telling stories through the mixture of native language and English.Sandwich methodology rarely has been applied into the English classroom teaching by combining the teaching program authentically according to the investigation of previous researches.Therefore,this paper tries to combine the sandwich story methodology with the current English textbooks in elementary school,and attempts to explore the intrinsic value of it and then provide a reference for the real English teaching.This study is based on the language positive transfer theory,the whole language theory as well as the bilingual processing theory,and considers the students of Grade 2 in Song jianglu primary school as research subjects.There are 42 students in the experimental class,while,the number of students in the controlled class is 43.Students' English level at beginning in two classes is similar according to the results of pre-test.They are offered by the same teaching materials but different teaching methods during the experiment.The sandwich teaching method was adopted in the experimental class,while the controlled one used the traditional teaching method.The entire experiment lasted for nearly eighteen weeks.And the experimental results were tested by tests,questionnaires and interview in the experiment.In order to figure out whether the sandwich story methodology has a positive impact on the English teaching at early language learning stage of children,this paper tries to answer the following three questions:1.After the teaching experiment in research class,whether the students' learning attitude and interest are changed?2.Whether the sandwich story methodology can effectively improve the students' English level of low grades in elementary school?3.Whether the sandwich story methodology can improve the effectiveness of memorizing words of students in elementary school?The experimental results proved that sandwich methodology can contribute effectively to improve the children's English vocabulary learning ability in low grade of primary school.sandwich methodology can stimulate students' learning interest and enthusiasm of the English vocabulary.And the vast majority of students keep the supportive attitude towards this teaching method.The results also demonstrate that the sandwich teaching method can effectively promote students to memorize vocabulary and improve their English level.In the end,the author discusses some implications and limitations of this study.Besides,some suggestions are presented by the author for the future researchers who want to investigate the sandwich methodology.The author hopes that the results of this study can provide a reference for the further development of English vocabulary teaching in primary school.
