New English Curriculum Standard requires that the teachers should design tasks which are close to the students' life and attract them to take part in completing the tasks. The students will learn English and complete tasks by thinking, researching, discussing, exchanging and cooperating. However, many teachers still adopt traditional teaching method during English reading teaching. They attach great importance to the explanations and instructions of words, syntactic structures and grammar knowledge and rarely design tasks. This thesis focuses on the question of how to design tasks for teaching English reading. And the author aims to solve the following problems. First, the author will find the existing problems of English reading teaching in our school. Second, the author will explore the ways of designing tasks for English reading teaching. Third, the author will focus on how to evaluate the task designs.At first, the thesis introduces the requirements of New English Curriculum Standard and the background, purpose, significance, content and method of the study. Through literature review, the author finishes the definition of tasks, designing tasks, task-based language teaching(TBLT) and English reading teaching in senior high schools.With the help of questionnaires, the author does a research on the practical situation of designing tasks for English reading teaching. After that, based on the related theories and the existing problems, the author tries to solve the problem of how to design tasks. At last, the author designs tasks for teaching reading of Module 3 in Advance with English and analyses them. Through this research, the author finds that many teachers do not design tasks for teaching reading. As to the ways of designing tasks, the author introduces the basic principles, basic elements, basic steps of designing tasks and three probable errors in designing tasks. As to the evaluation, the author advises that we should evaluate the task designs with the guidance of New English Curriculum Standard.Through this research, the author hopes to provide some practical task design approaches for English teachers. Besides, the author wants to give them some advice on how to design tasks.However, there are some shortcomings in the research, for example, Its depth and the rang of survey, which will be considered seriously in the future.
