Class exercises in textbook are important component of textbooks. For teachers,it is a critical issue to comprehensively understand the characteristics of class exercises in textbook and the writing intention,to effectively select and fully activate the application, which would efficiently serve teaching and students' learning. For students,it has very important influence on the development of good study habits, the improvement of thinking ability and academic performance whether the class exercises in textbook are properly designed and applied. For textbook writers, understanding the application of theclass exercises in textbook and getting the first-hand information from high school would be helpful for the revision and improvement of theclass exercises in textbook in future.By using literature study, questionnaire, text analysis and interview etc.,the design and application of the class exercises in textbook were discussed based on the high school biology textbook compulsory course "Genetics and Evolution"(PEP version 2).The main results were as follows:Based on the questionnaire from teachers and students who used the high school biology textbook compulsory course "Genetics and Evolution"(PEP version 2),it is demonstrated that the amount of the excises is less, the contents is much easier and the related production and living problems are partially old, therefore,it is usually being ignored by teachers and students in the practical use.Teachers and students in order to cope with all kinds of examinations,a lot of extracurricular exercises need to be complemented.Meanwhile, how to optimize the class exercises in textbook,to culture the students' capabilities in various aspects, and to satisfy the requirement and curiosity of students to knowledgement are the questions worth of consideration. After analyzed the class exercises in textbook "Genetics and Evolution"(Compulsory course 2-PEP version),it was found that the after class practices have rich questions,a clear division of the degree of difficulty. The after class exercises are designed mainly with basic questions, which pay attention to the mastery and integration of basic knowledge, and focus on the textbooks and leading role of teachers. At a certain degree, this ignored the students' self-learning andself-development,especially the less experimental exploration activities in the after class exercises. This may not properly inspire the students thinking and are not helpful for students to stimulate their experimental exploring capabilities.Based on the results of questionnaires and textbook exercise analysis, the class exercises in textbook "Genetics and Evolution"(Compulsory course 2-PEP version)could be further optimized.Based on the previous basis, three additional sections, including self-learning,optional exercises and extracurricular exploration can be added. After the addition of these three sections,it would be beneficial to strengthen the foundation of basic knowledge and specify key and difficult points. It would also be beneficial to improve the students' interest and the students' achievements, and to improve the openness of the after class.Considering the current situation of the design and application of the class exercises in textbook of "Genetics and Evolution"(PEP version),some suggestions were made as follows:(1)Design and apply the textbooks after class exercises according to the defined knowledge, capability, and three dimensional target of emotional attitude and value.(2)Enrich the biological teaching textbook and enhance the students' biological science literacy though doing the after class exercises.(3)Establish a scientific and reasonable evaluation mechanism and enhance teachers' teaching level through doing class exercises in textbook.
