Textbook plays very important role as an auxiliary tool in the implementation of basic education.After-class exercise is one of important components of the textbook. Not only,after-class exercises, help students consolidate and test knowledge they have learned but also help teachers improve teaching methods and adjust teaching progress. Therefore, the quality of after-class exercises affects students' scores to a great extent. In this paper, some comparisons of after-class exercises contents and types etc.between Biology11(a biology textbook for grade 11 in Ontario,Canada, abbr.Canadian textbook),and molecule and cell(Chinese compulsory biology textbook for senior high schools published in 2019,abbr.Chinese textbook)were done.We selected these two representative textbooks because Ontario is the political and economic center of Canada so as to its textbook has being an excellent model of Canadian high school biology teaching. It is also because those Ontario high school biology curriculum standards are similar with ours'.The results show:(1)They all had more clearly and easier understanding columns setting of after-class exercises in the textbooks of China and Canada.(2)Though the textbooks of both countries all set the target levels and completion degrees of the after-class exercises according to the contents.Canadian textbooks showed stricter and more detail demands than Chinese textbook about how to done and master the after-class exercises.(3)There were abundant and self-special after-class exercises types both in the textbooks of the two countries.(4)The number of after-class exercises arranged after the sections and chapters according to contents in Canadian textbooks were significantly more than those in 2019 Chinese textbooks.(5)Both Chinese and Canadian textbook all set many positions to arrange after-class exercises, but after-class exercises distributed into Chinese textbook more averagely.(6)The ratio of described and targeted after-class exercises numbers to total numbers is higher in Canadian textbooks than that in Chinese textbook.(7)The after-class exercises of the Chinese textbook are more inclined to exam the basic knowledge of biology and to pay more attention to the associations with real life phenomenon but have less and easier contents involving the concept of STSE(Science?Technology?Society?Environment)compared with those in the textbook of Canada. The after-class exercises in the Canadian textbook,on the contrary, pay more attention to the comparative analysis and associations of the primary concepts of biology. At the same time, the after-class exercises contents related to STSE concept are not only broad but also instructive and hierarchical in design in the Canadian textbook.Based on the comparative analysis of the above, the following suggestions are made when new after-class exercises are compiled again:(1)To give more clear objectives and requirements for after-class exercises learning. If necessary,to indicate the evaluation method and give the evaluation scale.(2)To increase the total number of after-class exercises, especially the number of open after-class exercises such as short answer questions, writing questions and design questions.(3)To strengthen the inspection intensity of biological concepts and basic biological knowledge and pay attention to the arrangement of after-class exercises.(4)To increase the number of after-class exercises with pictures and improve the quality of pictures.(5)To perfect the design of practical after-class exercises and highlight more STSE concepts. Finally, according to the comparison results,an after-class exercise case reflected the STSE concepts is designed to provide a reference for front-line biology teachers.
