The latest request of new English Curriculum Standards for primary reading teaching stresses the importance of reading. However, because of the effect of different concepts toward reading and present teaching condition, the reading teaching in primary schools is faced with a lot of difficulties and challenges. Therefore, the difficulty in primary English reading teaching is how to improve students' interest and ability in reading.Due to the validity of picture book in Chinese language teaching, the author wants to explore whether English picture books can effectively promote the primary school English reading teaching and learning in non-English language environment. English picture books which combine the picture with text well and have the rich and interesting content in them are in accordance with the current pupils' psychological demand. The purpose of this research is to explore whether English picture books can stimulate students' reading interest and improve the students' English reading level, especially students in high grade in primary school.The research combines qualitative and quantitative research methods, such as questionnaire, teaching experiment and interview. The subjects of research were divided into experimental class and control class, in which there are the 110 students taught by the author. There is no significant difference among these students' English level. Before the teaching practice, the author carries out questionnaires on the attitude of teachers on teaching English reading and students' reading statues. The author conducts the practice teaching of English picture books in primary school English reading class. After experiment, the author collects and processes the relevant data. Thus, the thesis draws the following conclusion:(1) Picture books really can stimulate pupils' reading interest.(2) Using English picture books in primary English reading class can improve pupils' reading level.At last, the author finds there existing some limitations in the research. Meanwhile,the author also comes up with some constructive suggestions for further study.
