The traditional reading instruction is a too single means, both teachers and students put more emphasis on the delivery and acquisition of content rather than improving students' reading comprehension skills.Since that, current reading teaching results may not be satisfying—learners lack positive cognition and the evolution of collective knowledge is hindered. However, social reading theory offers an effective way to change this situation.Based on the output of four existing case study, this paper discuss how to improve the quality of social reading platform from the perspective of knowledge building, aiming at offering students a professional and effective way to express their views. The first part focuses on the concept definition of three theories—social reading?knowledge building and scaffolding, the paper differences them from similar concepts, and illustrates how they will be contacted to provide a theoretical foundation for the double layer scaffolds'design. In the second part, the paper summarizes existing achievements of two pre-studies and compares different social reading platforms, then probes into the shortcomings of these tools, putting forward the core framework of the platform, with an approach describing how it will be used in actual study. At last, this part is mainly about the design and development of the platform.According to the building blocks of theoretical principles and design solution described above, this chapter centers around designing the double layer scaffolds and the technical architecture of the platform. Finally,we took an application test in East China Normal University.Through the test,we refined the teaching design, and perfected the tool's function to guarantee the success. The final result of data analysis verified the feasibility and effectiveness of this tool.
