Arousing and cultivating students' interests in learning English,making students build up self-confidence,and developing good study habits and forming effective learning strategies,to develop students' abilities of autonomous learning and cooperation is the goal of English teaching(English Curriculum Standard,2007).However,the traditional teaching mode emphasizes language knowledge teaching but ignore the development of students' abilities.So we must change the teaching idea and adopt reasonable and effective teaching measures to promote the development of students' abilities of independent learning and cooperation.With the implementation of the curriculum reform,many areas and schools begin to try and implement Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode which is based on the teaching experience of Dulangkou high school in Shandong Province,and is constructed as a set of universal efficient classroom teaching mode.But in the actual teaching,the teaching mode can't do best for various reasons.Under the guidance of the theories of “Constructivism”,“Humanism” and “Independent Learning Theory”,the study does questionnaire survey to 140 senior two students and interview to 11 English teachers who are both randomly selected from Inner Mongolia Chayouqouqi NO.1 Senior High School aiming to do researches on the following aspects:(1)What are the students' attitudes to Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode?(2)What are the actual states and effects of Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode according to the students' behavior in each link?From the questionnaire and the teachers' interview,we can draw the conclusions that most students have a sense of identity to Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode.They are active in each teaching link and students' abilities of finding out problems,exploring problems and solving problems and independent learning ability are cultivated.However,there are still some existing problems: 1.Disordered classroom;2.The form of presentation is single and the participation rate is low;3.Guidance cases are unreasonably designed and copied;4.Teachers' ability is limited so the classroom teaching is formalized.The author also analyzes the causes of these problems from the aspects of the school,teachers,and students.For the school,the intense pressure from College Entrance Examination,the growth in student number and various work that has nothing to do with teaching job are mainly factors.There are at least three reasons from teacher aspects,including the effects of traditional teaching concepts,lack of correct understanding of Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode,and the effects of the actual teaching situation in Chayouhouqi NO.1 Senior High School.Of course,there are still four reasons from the students,they are the difference between students themselves,lack of cooperative learning abilities,lack of self-control,and the influence of past learning habits.Based on the above findings,the paper provides some suggestions on how to carrying out Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode in senior English class effectively from the perspectives of the school,teachers and students.The main significance of this study is to find out and analyze the existing problems when Five Steps and Three Checks teaching mode is implemented so as to provide reference for expanding the teaching mode to other schools in other areas.
