Nowadays,English reading is still one of the most important ways for the students to gain information.It is also the precondition of developing other language skills.Hence,improving the students reading ability has become one of the most important tasks facing the English teachers.Looking at the current English classroom teaching,we may clearly find the low efficiency of English learning and the students are faced with various reading difficulties.The essay targets senior year 2 students.By analyzing questionnaires and interviews,the essay tries to find out what are the reading difficulties facing the year 2 students.Then combined with practical teaching experience,the essay recommends some solutions to improving English reading ability and makes some suggestions on English teaching.This study is made up of 5 chapters.Chapter one presents a general introduction.It starts from describing the current situation of high school reading classes.Based on the theories from home and abroad,the questionnaire and the interview,the essay emphasizes the necessity and importance of studying reading difficulties.Chapter two presents a general development of the study of reading difficulties in China and clarifies the types of reading difficulties,that is,language difficulties and non-language difficulties.Chapter three and Chapter fourare the core of the whole essay,based on the analysis of the data,Chapter three explains the language difficulties in detail which include vocabulary,sentence structure,context and genre and elicits some strategies to deal with thedifficulty.Chapter four explains the non-language difficulties in detail,which cover background information,reading motivation,reading habits and reading strategies and also recommends some strategies to cope with the difficulties.Chapter five mainly discusses the findings and the aspects that still need improving.The findings are that there are two main reading difficulties in English reading.:language difficulties and non-language difficulties.Language difficulties include vocabulary,sentence structure,context and genre.Non-language difficulties include background information,motivation,habit and strategy.Changing the traditional teaching model and involving the reading strategies in teaching can effectively improve the students' reading abilities.
