Difficulties Encountered By Senior Students In English Reading And Their Corresponding Strategies

With the rapid development of the Internet technology,English,as an important means of information communication,is playing an increasingly important role.Social development and scientific advance require people to improve reading ability.To meet these requirements,the teaching of reading comprehension,as an important part of English teaching,must be strengthened.With the ongoing development of foreign language teaching,we need to integrate the teaching of teachers with the studying of students.In the English test questions of National Matriculation Test for the past few years,more stress has been laid on the examination of students' comprehensive language applying ability;while,take the students from Lanxi No.1 Middle School for example.the fact is that majority of senior students reside at a relatively low level in regarding to their judgment reasoning and summary ability.Consequently,to improve students' reading comprehension and develop their reading comprehension ability,it is necessary that we make a research into the difficulties arising from the English reading of the senior students and the corresponding strategies.The purpose of this paper is to answer the following two questions: 1,how many difficulties exist in the students' reading and comprehension? 2,what are the reasons for the existence of these foregoing difficulties? And based on this,a series of corresponding teaching strategies are formulated regarding the current teaching of English reading and comprehension.Taking Constructivism,Information-Processing approach and Scheme as a theory basis,this paper,by investigation on Lanxi No.1 Middle School,draws a teaching theory which can help to enrich the teaching of English reading.This paper provides multi-angle views and concepts by analyzing and discussing the difficulties and strategies existed with the English reading and comprehension.For the study of words,students can make a breakthrough from the three aspects: pronunciation,formation and meaning.Students can learn to memorize new words by making comparison as to synonyms and antonyms;they can also cultivate a sense of English by ways of dictation,recitation,text-reading of the major sentence patterns and paragraphs.For example,students can first grasp the five basic sentence patterns of simple English sentences,and learn to use the conversion from non-finite verbs to clauses.By repeatedly doing exercises regarding the noun clauses and attributive clauses,students can master them and use them to express meanings.It is my hope that through the foregoing methods,teaching results of students' reading ability can be efficiently improved.Mean while,owing to the influence from the preparation time,work circumstance,as well as the author's professional knowledge,some inadequacies may exist in this paper.First,as only one senior middle school was selected as a survey target,this research can not reflect all the views on the reading difficulties and their corresponding solutions encountered by the senior students.Secondly,there are many factors can pose reading difficulties,such as study motives,conceptions,attitudes,ages of learners,individualities,intelligence,study style and language potentials,etc.From these we can see that reading is a very complicated psychological cognition,an activity,therefore,the factors affecting the reading efficacy also vary significantly.So,by solely abstracting statistics from student's investigation questioners or through the conclusion drawn from the teachers' research into the related reading theories and teaching practice,one can far not describe the whole picture of reading difficulties and their solutions.In the future teaching practice,I should also endeavor to make more attempts to observe the reading difficulties and solutions from different angles and a multiple layers.Only by doing research like this,can the analysis and understanding of the reading difficulties and their solutions be more accurate,more complete and objective.To summarize the above,from the research conducted by the scholars both home and abroad,we may find that,in addition to the languages knowledge such as grammar,vocabulary and chapters,a lack of reading strategy is also one of the difficulties encountered by senior students.Viewed from the available documents,our domestic research lays great emphasis on the application of the strategies and the efficiency of the training of such application,while,the research targeting reading difficulties and solutions rarely mentions solutions.We should,in the future English reading teaching,make actively more attempts from different angles and levels to investigate and analyze the difficulties and formulate their corresponding solutions.Only by doing like this,can the solution strategies targeted on these difficulties be more objective and accurate.
