Multimedia-assisted language teaching(MALT)is more and more widely used in classroom teaching of primary and secondary school now.It is an inevitable outcome of the combination of multimedia technique and educational theories since it entered the field of education.How to improve English teaching and learning by using the technique is a hot topic in recent years.Therefore,the author attempts to take Xiaode Middle School as an example,to study the use of multimedia courseware in rural middle school and how to make multimedia courseware more efficient in rural middle school English teaching.This paper summarizes the relevant theories of multimedia assisted instruction,such as constructivism,second language acquisition theory,and information processing theory;meanwhile it gives an overview of the development of multimedia-assisted language teaching.Such research methods as interviews,questionnaires,class observations are used to examine teachers' and students' attitudes and perceptions about the use of multimedia-assisted teaching in the English classrooms at Xiaode Middle School.The results have shown that the multimedia course ware is helpful indeed in the teaching,such as helping to create real-life situations,diversifying teaching aids,expanding teaching resources,enhancing students' engagement and development of cognitive abilities.The author has also found that there are some problems existing in the process of using the new technology at Xiaode Middle School.The problems are mainly from the teachers,the students and the course ware itself.Through the analysis of the data,the author puts forward the suggestions to optimize the use of multimedia courseware.First of all,teachers change their views of teaching by designing courseware from the students' point of view,and regarding the students as the main body of the classroom.The teacher should also continue to strengthen the theoretical study,enhance the ability of practical operation of the computer,and make their courseware forms interesting,but not too complex.In that case,the students will not feel visual fatigue.In conclusion,course ware is just a new type of teaching aid,which is not supposed to take the place of the traditional chalk and blackboard.In order to make full use of it,we can combine them together to achieve better teaching results in the English classrooms.
