The application of multimedia courseware to language teaching in elementary and secondary schools in China has been a new academic research area over the past decade. Generally speaking, teachers would reorganize the teaching materials based on the principles of course design and make them into multimedia courseware for classroom teaching. The set of multimedia courseware for Oxford English(Junior High) is widely used in Shanghai. Nevertheless, is this set of courseware scientifically and appropriately made? Can it be effectively applied in English teaching? The answers to these questions should be based on language learning theories, course design theory, principles of multimedia courseware designing as well as teaching practice.The main research method applied in this thesis is empirical study. The author analyzed the relevant areas of theories and tried to work out an evaluating system for multimedia courseware of language teaching. Based on this system and selecting 6A M3 U8 as her main objective, the author conducted an overall examination and assessment of Oxford English multimedia courseware for 6 & 7 Grades. The study shows that this set of multimedia courseware adopts situational teaching method by focusing on the creation of situations for language teaching, and that it attracts students by the characteristics of multimedia technology. In the process of the study, some deficiencies of the set of multimedia courseware have been found, and corresponding solutions and suggestions have been provided.
