Vocabulary is the basis of learning a language.Only by memorizing a large vocabulary in the mind,can you have the possibilities of using the language flexibly.English vocabulary teaching plays a decisive role,and it can be said without exaggeration that English teaching starts with vocabulary.Senior English New Curriculum Standard explicitly puts forward that high school students should master three thousand and five hundred words before graduation.However,due to the lack of effective teaching methods in practical English teaching and feasible theoretical guidance,the English vocabulary teaching methods are old-fashioned,which mainly focus on the explanation of words and ignore the initiative of students' vocabulary learning.There is rare or even no interaction between teacher and student,and between student and student.It has made the students lose the original interest in vocabulary learning,thus limiting the improvement of their overall level of English.The present vocabulary teaching research has caused the attention of many researchers,and everyone is trying a variety of methods,hoping to find effective ways.In recent years,a series of practices and studies at home and abroad have shown that group cooperative learning is a new kind of creative and effective learning style and strategy.Cooperative learning adapts to the teaching rules of modern school education,arouses the enthusiasm of the students to learn and changes the the traditional learning environment.Students' studies are improved.Meanwhile,their team consciousness of mutual cooperation is enhanced and their comprehensive quality is also further improved.Group cooperative learning theory now is gradually perfect.Though studies about it have been a lot,they mostly focus on primary and junior schools,while in high school,the effective implementation is rare.Even though they occasionally appear,most become a mere formality.Due to the teaching of English in many aspects,to achieve the target,this paper mainly aimed at conducting a thorough research on the high school English vocabulary teaching.This paper first introduces the research status of group cooperative learning and vocabulary learning at home and abroad.And then introduces the theoretical basis of the study.Third,it explores the validity and possibility of cooperative learning in high school vocabulary teaching.Finally,after carrying out a large number of experimental teaching and further investigation,and analyzing the first-hand experimental materials and the survey results,the conclusion is drawn and suggestions are put forward.The paper aims at the empirical research,with experiments to prove the practicability and effectiveness of cooperative learning theory in vocabulary teaching in high school.The research was conducted in two parallel classes,class 8 and class 9,whose English levels are similar.One is the experimental class using the cooperative learning and the other is the control class using the traditional way of vocabulary teaching.The experiment lasted 4 months.After the experiment,questionnaires and interviews were carried out to analyze the effectiveness of group cooperative learning in English vocabulary teaching.The experimental results are as follows:the group cooperative learning is effective in the high school English vocabulary teaching,and is helpful to improve students' English learning level at all levels.There is a main growth in students'vocabulary and their vocabulary memorization and discrimination ability are greatly improved.Through cooperative learning in vocabulary,students' confidence of learning English is well enhanced.The experimental results have shown that cooperative learning not only improves the students' English application level,but also enhance the overall level of students' English listening,speaking,reading and writing.
