Socio-Spatial Transformation In The Urban Renewal Of Nanluoguxiang Historic District

The city is the concentrated reflection of human civilization,and the urban renewal is an inevitable demand of city's metabolism.Most of historic districts have lots of productions as confusion in layout,overcrowding,poor infrastructure and so on.At the same time,historic district is an important carrier of urban memory,agglomerating the genius loci and local traditional culture.Therefore,the urban renewal of historic district has always been a real problem in the development of the city,and attacts many scholars' attention from sociology,geography,architecture and other fields.Nanluoguxiang has more than 700 years history,and it is the first batch of historic conservation area in Beijing.How the production of the space has happened in it's urban renewal?And what is the dynamic mechanism?How does the history and culture of the block reflect and reconstruct the urban space?How does the consumerism and capital logic reshape the social space and social structure of thedistrict?We can not only summing up experience but also we can have a profounder understanding of urban renewal,and forming a indigenized theory and practical logic.This paper explores the socio-spatial transformation of Nanluoguxiang historic district with the theories of spatial production,spatial consumption,consumer culture.Firstly,the paper reviews the spatial transformation and combs the cultural resources of Nanluoguxiang historic district in order to grasp its current situation overally.And then,this paper explores the "urban renewal" and "production of space" of Nanluoguxiang historic distric,and pointed out that there are three paths reconstructing the urban memory.The offical discourse guides the reconstruction of local memory with its professionalism,reliability,authority,while civil discourse repeating and supplementing it with vitality and freshness.The business operators and consumers strengthen collective memory selectively with the help of consumerism,and become the main producers of the spatial culture.In addition,this paper makes further efforts to analyzes the "consumption of space" of Nanluoguxiang historic distric,and find out that Nanluoguxiang has happened spatial transformation from"creative block" to "tourist attraction" by untangling it commercial changes and current situation.Finally,this study analyzes the relocation project of four Hutong,the problem of spatial replication and social distinction.On the one hand,with the development of the main street of Nanluoguxiang has been exhausted,capital began to penetrate the surrounding Hutong and replicate the production and consumption of space.On the other hand,the social distinction has been generated in the commercialized main street.The rights of city and spatial justice are facing new challenges.This paper summarizes the latest ten years' urban renewal practice and socio-spatial transformation,trying to point out the characteristics and problems of the urban renewal in historic distric.Appealing to ensure the rights of the residents to participate in the production and consumption process of the space,and reflect the interests of residents in urban renewal to achieve the spatial justice.
