Chemical terminology is a kind of unified symbolic language used to express the construction, structure and law of change of a substance which is prescribed internationally.Being of vital importance in chemistry learning and communication,it was born in and,at the same time, serves the development and production of chemistry. At present,it is not only a tool for chemistry communication and but also a thought tool in chemistry learning.Chemical terminology is both the foundation and the soul for chemistry as a discipline, and for chemistry teaching in junior high schools,it is important basic chemical knowledge as well as an important tool for learning chemistry. The author has long been in the front line of education work and found in the teaching of junior high school chemistry that the learning of chemical terminology resulted in the differentiation of junior high school students in chemistry learning.Students who learnt chemical terminology well could learn chemistry well, while those who didn't couldn't learn well.My communication with those students feeling difficult in chemistry learning and getting low chemical scores and with the peer showed that they also agreed with the foregoing opinion. Why is it difficult for junior high school students to learn chemistry? What is chemical terminology and what's its past and present? How do junior high school students learn chemical terminology? What are the problems they have in their study? Why do they have difficulties in learning? What strategies can we use in teaching to solve these problems? An analysis and research was made mainly through reference to literature, interview and communication with chemistry teachers and students, and combination with my own teaching experience.Problems junior high school students had in learning chemical terminology were analyzed from the perspectives of their ideas on learning chemical terminology and their mastery of chemical terminology knowledge, and three reasons causing the problem of chemical terminology learning were found: firstly, chemical terminology itself consists of numerous terms and complicated contents, which are easily to be confused;secondly, junior high school students attach insufficient importance to chemistry study and have inadequate abstract thinking ability and improper studying methods;thirdly, the teaching of teachers is dull, with no attention to methods and analysis of learning situation.Based on the analysis on the learning problems and reasons and in conjunction with the relevant theories and rules, five teaching strategies were brought up regarding the learning of chemical terminology: first, stimulating the learning interest of students with various methods, since “interest is the best teacher”;2 scattering difficult points, sensing beforehand and proceeding step by step;3.incorporating triple representations,i.e.macroscopic,microscopic and intensified,in the teaching of chemical terminology;4.clarifying alternative conceptions beforehand and guiding the formation of correct concepts or thoughts;5 visualization strategy.
