Faculty of Education in British Columbia University(UBC)was founded in 1956.The predecessor of the faculty was British Columbia normal school.In 1956,British Columbia Normal School and British Columbia University educational school was merged and became an independent education institution.The new faculty provided undergraduate degree for students of University and trained these students to be good secondary school teacher.The curriculum was help students obtain a teacher certificate or develop a education degree for the middle school teacher career.From 1956 to 1974,the secondary school teacher curriculum in the UBC Faculty of Education can be divided into three periods:The 1956/57 school year to the 1962/63 school year was the start-up period of the secondary school teacher education program.Faculty of Education established a secondary school teacher education degree system based on British Columbia teacher qualification certificate curriculum.The new curriculum system provides students with four ways to obtain a bachelor's degree and to provide the British Columbia Secondary School Teacher Qualification Certificate course for non-education undergraduates.At this time,the curriculum developed from short-term certificate course to the five-year education bachelor's degree program,the course content is increased and the new subjects are added.The 1963/64 school year to the 1967/68 school year is the adjustment period for the secondary school teacher education curriculum.In the 1963/64 school year,the UBC Faculty of Education merged with the University Physical Education School upgrade the training courses to the secondary school PE teacher education curriculum,so the training of secondary school PE teachers was able to balance sports skills and educational skill.In the 1966/67 school year,the Faculty began to update some content about the curriculum.For instance reduce the content of traditional labor education,and increase the modern science and technology education.1968/69 school year to 1973/74 school year,is the reform period of the secondary school teacher education curriculum.From the beginning of the 1968/69 school year,the Faculty of Education established 24 research directions on the basis of the original Master of Education and PhD program,of which eight were involved in the development of research secondary school teachers.In addition,the Faculty of Education has reformed the teaching practice curriculum and reconstructed the objectives and functions of the teaching practice curriculum,not only adding time,but also to cultivate practical ability,reflective consciousness and innovative spirit.In the 1972/73 academic year,Professor John Andrews,Director of the Faculty of Education,led the"Commission on the Future of the Faculty of Education " to carry out a large-scale reform of the existing secondary school teacher education curriculum,to add new curriculum content and to establish the inquiry-based curriculum.From 1956 to 1974,it was the early stage of the secondary school teacher education curriculum in UBC.In the course of curriculum construction,there is a rule that evolves from a single goal to multiple goals,from career function to professional development,and is evolved from subject-based curriculum to integrated inquiry-based curriculum.The purpose,goal,content and development law of the secondary school teacher curriculum of British Columbia University provide important experience and inspiration for our teacher education curriculum reformation.
