English reading is one of the most important parts of senior high school English teaching.For English Foreign Language students,reading can be the best way to increase their language input and improve their English proficiency.However,English reading teaching in senior high school is far from satisfaction,and most students hold a negative attitude towards the passive teaching mode.Critical reading is a high-level reading activity,which can arouse students' initiative,enhance their critical reading proficiency and foster their critical thinking ability.Conducting critical reading teaching in senior high school can not only contribute to students' reading scores,but also fully meet the requirement of the New Curriculum Standard.Based on constructive theory,schema theory,this study adopts documentary analysis,quantitative and qualitative research method,aiming at figuring out whether critical reading teaching is conducive to improve the current situation of English reading.Three research questions are explored in this paper:1.Can critical reading improve senior high school students' reading scores of inference question and analytical question?2.Can critical reading improve senior high school students' interest in English reading?3.Can critical reading promote students' critical thinking skills?The research is carried out in No.31 senior high school of Shenyang.Two parallel classes from grade two are selected as research subjects.The experiment lasts for one term.In the process of the experiment,pre-test,post-test,questionnaires,and an interview are conducted and the statistical software SPSS17.0 is applied for analyzing the relevant data.The experiment results manifest that the critical reading can improve students' reading scores as well as reading interests.What is more,after having critical reading class for a semester,the students' critical thinking skills also improved.Although critical reading has been proved to have some positive effects,it also has some limitations in the process of its application,especially in senior high school.Therefore,more efforts and investigations about critical reading are needed for further research.
