Reading is always very important in every language.People know more, study more by reading.English is not an exception. As for the foreign language teachers and learners in China,English reading plays a very significant role in senior schools.Basically,it is one of the four skills in English learning. Moreover,it's the key and indispensable part of the National English Entrance Examination. However,English reading comprehension for both English teachers and senior students is a dilemma, namely,it is hard to master the reading comprehension while it is impossible to give it up.Therefore,to find a solution is emergent. Many scholars and experts have made researches to find out an effective way to improve students' reading ability with great effort.Task-based Language Teaching emerges as the time requires.Task-based Language Teaching puts the students into the key points in a class and promotes learning by doing and finishing various tasks which can stimulate the students' learning interest and motivation, from which students' English reading ability can get improved. In other words, students learn by doing. The Ministry of Education of China issues New English Curriculum Standards for High School in 2003 to advocate Task-based Language Teaching,in order to improve the current teaching of English reading in middle school. This study aims to answer the following questions based on the theory of task-based language teaching:1)What are the reading level of students now?2)Can Task-based Language Teaching is an effective approach to stimulate students ' English studying interest and improve their reading ability as well as communicative, cooperative ability? An experimental study is carried out,in order to answer the research questions. The research is carried out in a certain middle school in Gengma County Yunnan Province and the subjects are senior one students from two classes: Class 178 and Class 179.Class 179 is the experimental class,in which Task-based Language Teaching approach is applied, while Class 178 is the controlled class which is taught by the traditional Grammar-translation Method. In order to get the answers to theresearch questions, the writer prepared and designed a questionnaire and the results are collected and reported. Moreover,to see whether TBLT approach is efficient or not more clearly, two reading tests are distributed to the subjects before and after the experiment in the controlled class. From the experiment and tests of the data ahead,TBLT is an effective approach in English reading teaching is obviously seen.TBLT has its own advantages compared with the traditional teaching approach, from which both teachers and students can get benefit.TBLT class can be more active, enjoyable, appealing and challenge-able.The advantages will be listed as follows:1)TBLT can make most students involve in the class.Students who do nothing in traditional class will do something here.2)TBLT teaching can help more students know about the reading strategies and also more students can use the reading strategies.3)One prominent merit of TBLT is also showed in the study--communicative and cooperative ability of students is obviously seen after the experiment. From the above findings, some implications for English reading teaching and learning were put forward: 1)In TBLT class, task is the most significant component.2)The roles of the teacher and students changed. In TBLT,the center is the students but not the teacher any more.3)There are no real weak students, the teacher should be full confident about the students.4)A large amount of pre-class preparation is necessary for the teacher who wants to apply TBLT..Some limitations are still exist although measures have been taken to guarantee the validity of this study. Therefore, improvements to this research can be made and further studies should be carried out in the future.
