Underachiever is a very large group in junior middle school English learning,English educators pay much attention to this issue.Currently,English learning methods and contents are greatly changed from primary school to junior middle school.If students can not adjust their state of mind,change the learning methods and attitudes,they are likely to be a member of the underachiever group.Therefore,analyzing the real causes of producing underachievers and finding the practical transformation strategy are imperative.This study takes experimental middle school in Xinmin as the research site and 100 underachievers of English as the research objects.Through questionnaire and interview upon the objects of study and based on the theory of non-intelligence factors and self-efficacy theory,the author finds out the causes of producing underachievers.According to these causes,the author comes up with some corresponding transformation strategies and carries on experiment under the help of English teachers,aiming to verify the effectiveness of these strategies.The result of this research shows that non-intelligence factors are the main factors that influence English underachievers in grade one.This study mainly analyzes in depth from both internal and external factors.The internal factors mainly refer to the interest,motivation,attitude,emotion,self-confidence,learning habits,methods and programs.The external factors mainly refer to the school,teacher,family and society.Then the author puts forward corresponding strategies to transform underachievers from internal and external aspects.Internal transformation strategy mainly include improving students' learning interest and motivation of English,cultivating their healthy emotion effectively,enhancing their self-confidence,developing good learning habits,and so on.External transformation strategy mainly include introducing teachers with high-quality talent,improving English teachers'education and teaching ability,improving teaching methods and types of classroom organization,improving parents,attitude towards underachievers and so on.Although some results have been obtained in this thesis,there are still some problems that need to be solved.Due to the limitations of time and space as well as personal ability,the author hopes that more scholars will apply more advanced methods to this field in the future.
