The Ordinary Senior High English New Curriculum Standard(2013)has set a higher standard for students' vocabulary:senior high school students should master at least 4500 words and 400 idioms or set phrases.However,senior high students are always faced with the problems such as small vocabulary size,time consuming with low efficiency,and anxiety of memorizing words when they are learning vocabulary.In this case,traditional vocabulary teaching methods and class readings cannot meet the demands of the present situation.With the implement of New Curriculum Standard and the development of the new course reform of high school teaching,senior high teachers should make great efforts to find out an effective approach of vocabulary teaching to help students grasp more words efficiently.Natural reading is different from class reading,which mainly extracts the meaning and information from the materials,and the readers do not do any exercises during or after reading(for example,multiple choices).Only when having difficulty in understanding the context,will students pay attention to key words.Natural reading not only helps students pay special attention to key words,but also helps them raise their awareness of guessing the meaning of the words actively.Schmitt(2001)considered that vocabulary acquisition is a gradual process and natural reading provides us with the most wide and steady resources to contact vocabulary.Zhang Xian&Qi Luxia(2009)found that the main function of natural reading is to provide the opportunity of encountering with new words and it develops the partial knowledge of these words.Once natural reading interacts with other factors such as noticing,comprehension and application,it will develop the full knowledge of new words.This thesis mainly discusses about the effect of natural reading on the Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition(IVA)so as to prove whether natural reading can be helpful on the IVA and help students find out an efficient way to learn and memorize the English words.This study aims to address the following issues:1.Compared with the traditional class reading exercises,what is the change of rate of IVA in natural reading?2.Compared with the traditional class reading exercises,what is the change of the retention of students' IVA in natural reading?3.What is the effect of natural reading on students' learning attitude to the IVA?120 students in Liaoning Experimental Senior High School Liaobin Branch are chosen as the research subjects,which are divided into two classes:experimental class(EC)and control class(CC).The teaching experiment lasts for three months from September in 2016 to December in 2016.The research combines quantitative study with qualitative analysis,which contains experiment,test(pre-test,post-test and delayed test),questionnaire,data statistics and analysis,etc.During the stage of the experiment,the two groups adopt the same reading materials,but students are asked to use different reading methods:natural reading and traditional class reading method.At the last stage of the experiment,the thesis concludes and summarizes the data,and analyzes statistics.The results show that:compared with the traditional reading,the rate of IVA in natural reading is higher than that in traditional reading and the acquisition rate means the percentage of the target words that students acquired;and the results of delayed test proves that the retention of IVA in natural reading is higher than that in traditional reading and the retention means the percentage of target words that students can correctly recall;finally,the result of questionnaire shows that natural reading has a good effect on students' learning attitude to IVA.In view of the limited time,energy and ability,there are still plenty of shortcomings in this study.Therefore,the study puts forward some suggestions on the application research of the correlation between natural reading and IVA in senior high English teaching.
