As the main channel to improve students' comprehensive language ability,reading plays an important role in cultivating language skills like listening,speaking,writing and translation.Therefore,to strengthen reading teaching,to cultivate and improve the students' reading ability is a key part of the English teaching in senior high schools.Autonomous inquiry-based teaching method is to make students feel that the knowledge is obtained by self discovery,thus to guide the students' inquiry-based learning as well as to encourage students to take the initiative to consciously construct inner knowledge.Autonomous inquiry-based learning aims to inspire each student to actively try to explore,to learn how to make use of the Internet and other multimedia resources under the guidance of teachers.As a result,the cooperation and exchanges between students and students can be strengthened through group cooperation.So according to the teaching goal,with the guidance of teachers,the students are to develop effective learning strategies and learning plans by completing a variety of learning tasks and creative learning activities,so the traditional "chalk and talk" teaching mode can be changed.In the teaching mode,a teacher should act as the leading factor and the student as the center of class.In the 15 years of work,the author has found that the reading ability of senior high school students is not high,and to a certain extent,it really affects and restricts the improvement of English comprehensive ability.English class teaching and tests reveal the weakness of students: the reading purpose is either utilitarian or unclear;their vocabulary is limited,their reading habits are not good;reading methods are not scientific,and they have no training in reading skills,etc.Regarding the importance of reading,the author tries to put the students as the center of the class,and set the appropriate context so as to arouse students' reading interest,to stimulate students to explore independently,to enhance high school students' reading ability in new ways to cultivate students' independent inquiry and improve the language ability.A teaching experiment was conducted from October 2015 to July 2016,10 months in total.Two parallel classes of Senior Two from Qingdao No.16 Middle School wererespectively selected as a control class and an experiment class.These two classes are similar to each other in classroom discipline,academic record and other aspects.The research data are collected through tests and questionnaires.Then the data are analyzed with Excel after the author observes and records the classroom teaching procedures.The result of analysis shows that the application of autonomous inquiry-based teaching pattern to English reading has a significant effect on the development of students' inquiry learning ability from the following two aspects: independent inquiry and learning motivation.This study has put forward an appropriate autonomous inquiry-based teaching pattern to high school English reading teaching with two specific lesson examples.Besides,this study proves that the autonomous inquiry-based teaching pattern has significant effect in English teaching.And from the usual classroom observation,students of experiment class are active in thinking,and they express their own opinions with high enthusiasm and strong cooperation spirits.Autonomous inquiry-based teaching pattern contributes to improving the high school students' English reading ability and it is also conducive to the development of students' independent inquiry learning ability.
