A Research On English Teachers' Objective Design For In-class Instruction In Senior High Schools

In the process of English teaching,effective English instructional design is the premise of effective teaching.When English teachers design instructional design,instructional objectives play an important role in guiding the English teaching.They decide the arrangement of teaching content,the choice of teaching methods,the utilization of teaching strategies.And specific,operable and measurable instructional objectives are important evaluation criterion at the end of classes.As English teachers of senior high schools,the competence of designing instructional objectives is very important.Therefore,in order to know and analyze the current situation of English teachers' objective design for in-class instruction in senior high schools,the author does the research.The research questions are as follows:1.How do English teachers understand instructional objectives in senior high schools?2.What's the current situation of designing English instructional objectives in senior high schools?3.What's the current situation of implementing English instructional objectives in senior high schools?In order to analyze the research questions,the author does the research in Xinzhou Senior High School,The No.1 Middle School of Jincheng,Qinshui Middle School,Linxian Middle School and Shanxi Modern Bilingual School.With using questionnaire,analysis of instructional cases and classroom observation,the research investigates the present situation of English teachers' instructional objectives in the 5 different senior high schools of Shanxi Province.The research procedures are as follows: Firstly,distribute and collect the questionnaires from 5 senior high schools.70 questionnaires are answered by English teachers of Senior Two seriously.Secondly,collect instructional cases from the 5 senior high schools.In the process of collecting,47 instructional cases which include 126 instructional objectives are collected.Then the author analyzes these instructional objectives according to the SMART principles.Lastly,observe the English classes of the 5 senior high schools.In order to know the implementation of instructional objectives,the author chooses 31 periods among the 47 instructional cases to observe according to the classroom observation scale.After the data analysis and discussion,the author finds out that :From the aspect of understanding of English instructional objectives,a wide range of English teachers thought it is necessary to design instructional objectives in the process of teaching,and they have a good attitude towards it.But there are some English teachers can't understand English Curriculum Standard correctly and can't combine it with their own instructional objectives.Even some English teachers thought it is unnecessary to design different instructional objectives for different levels of learners.From the aspect of designing instructional objectives,a few English teachers could design their instructional objectives according to the principles of designing instructional objectives(SMART Principles: specific,measurable,attainable,relevant and timed).Most English teachers could design specific instructional objectives,followed by attainable objectives,measurable objectives and relevant objectives.They seldom add time limitation to their instructional objectives.There are some problems such as subjects dislocation and confusion,the absent of time limitation and the vagueness of the instructional objectives when they design instructional objectives.From the aspect of implementing instructional objectives,the author finds that most English teachers could design appropriate activities and teaching content,which are aligned with their own instructional objectives.In the process of implementing,many English teachers would like to use traditional teaching methods rather than some interesting teaching methods.Learners could accomplish their tasks but they can't take part in the classroom activities actively.Based on the analysis and discussion of English teachers' instructional objectives in senior high schools,some pedagogical implications are shown in the end of the research,which hope to help English teachers improve their abilities and improve the efficiency of English classes.
