With the increasing role of vocabulary in foreign language teaching,the theoretical and empirical studies on vocabulary learning strategies have been gradually promoted.As one of the three elements of language,vocabulary plays an important role in English teaching and learning.Therefore,it is necessary to study how to strengthen senior school students' vocabulary knowledge and improve their vocabulary size.120 senior grade-two students from Xingtai No.2 High School were invited to participate in the survey.This research used a questionnaire to investigate student's vocabulary learning strategies and adopted vocabulary level test to survey student's vocabulary size.Students in the survey are divided into two groups according to the vocabulary levels test scores.The result of this research reveals that the cognitive strategies are the most frequently used and the meta-cognitive strategies are the least frequently used strategies.It is found that students with high vocabulary size use more learning strategies than those with low vocabulary size.Besides,the study shows that a variety of strategies are positively correlated with students' vocabulary level test scores(r=0.233).Correlation analysis reveals that guessing strategy,connection strategy and self monitoring strategy can help students to increase their vocabulary size.Based on the conclusions,the author puts forward some suggestions to help students master vocabulary learning strategies and enlarge their vocabulary size.Such as,student's positivity should be improved when they are taught learning strategies.Besides,interest teaching can be adopted to stimulate students' interest in English vocabulary.What's more,students should use vocabulary learning strategies conscientiously in their daily English vocabulary learning.Therefore,teachers should consciously train students to learn how to use vocabulary learning strategies to expand their vocabulary size.The author puts forward some practical suggestions which are given from the perspectives of students,English teachers,and schools.
