Considering the fact that reading comprehension section takes up a great proportion in National Matriculation English Test, it is vital for we high school English teachers to develop and promote our students' reading abilities, which means we are supposed to expose them to large quantities of English reading materials, original English works in particular. Nowadays, our students are inclined to choose different media to read English materials: they can read traditional paper books or electronic books like Kindle books. One may wonder which plays a more positive role in improving Chinese high school students' English reading ability. At home, there are no related researches; beyond seas, there are some researches associated with the question, all of them, though, target native students instead of Chinses high school students whose second language is English. Therefore, the author intends to take Chinese high school students as research objects and compares two different effects on the target students' reading ability.More precisely, the author selects sixty Senior Grade Two students as study samples who come from two classes in Nanjing No. 27 High School and are divided into two groups. One is the experimental group, whose members will read Kindle books; the other is the control group, the members of which will read traditional paper books. The author intends to find which medium plays a more important role in improving students' English reading ability by solving the questions: Of English paper books and e-books, which plays a more positive role in improving Chinese high school students' reading ability? To solve the issue above, the author finds out the measurements of one's reading ability first, which are vocabulary size, the ability to guess the meanings of new words and expressions according to the context, the accuracy in translating sentences, and the ability to obtain and handle information. Then the author makes a comparison between experimental group and control group about their performance in their reading ability measurements. At last, the author has interviews with some research targets, surveys all the research targets with questionnaires for the sake of their self-assessment in reading ability and supplement of the data, both of which will be of great benefit to solid conclusions.Eventually the author draws the following conclusions: firstly, both paper books and e-books play an obviously positive role in Chinese high school students' reading ability;secondly, the role they have played is equal.
