Language learning involves vocabulary,grammar and reading materials.In this thesis,the vocabulary,grammar and reading materials of two sets of English textbooks will be compared and analyzed.These two textbooks are Oxford English(Shanghai edition)and PEP English(Go for it).Teachers have a better understanding on the features of two sets of textbooks and then they can make better use of textbooks in the process of their teaching.The author reviews the related theories of textbook evaluation and theories of textbook analysis,and designs the framework for this thesis.The thesis is divided into internal and external evaluation.Firstly,the author makes an internal evaluation by using the comparative analysis method and literature method to analyze two sets of textbooks.Secondly,an external evaluation is conducted by questionnaires and interviews in 21 junior middle schools from Datong city,Taiyuan City,Yuncheng City,Jincheng City and Changzhi city,including 150 teachers.In addition,12 teachers are interviewed.Finally,the author analyze the results and sums the features of two sets of textbooks.The following three questions are discussed in the thesis:(1)What are the different characteristics of arrangement of vocabulary part in two sets of textbooks? Whether it is consist with the requirement of New Curriculum Standard or not?(2)How is the overall grammar items designed in two sets of textbooks? Whether it is conducive to practical teaching or not?(3)Whether the arrangement of reading materials in two sets of textbooks is suit for teachers and students or not?According to the data analysis and discussion,the results are as follows:(1)Two sets of textbooks both have independent model in the presentation of vocabulary,grammar and reading materials;The vocabulary quantity in two sets of textbooksboth meet the requirement of the New English Curriculum Standard.In contrast,it is find that the vocabulary quantity is larger in PEP,but the vocabulary is not too difficult;(2)PEP(Go for it)presents the grammar by the model of Grammar focus.They are arranged from easy items to difficult ones.Oxford(Shanghai)presents the grammar by the model of Work out the rule and Things to remember;(3)The choice of discourse topics is close to life.Oxford(Shanghai)is more in line with local conditions.Finally,the results of study provide assistance with teachers in choosing and using textbooks and textbook editors in compiling.
