For a long time,the issue of how to succeed in helping students to extract the useful information efficiently and effectively,stimulating their strong interest in the process of English reading teaching,is one of the problems that language teachers have been pondering.The seriousness of the matter is more obvious,especially for those schools in rural areas of our country and the causes of this phenomenon are various.The author deems the main reasons include: students' poor interest for English study,one class with too many students,teachers' single teaching methods,and low reading level on the whole.As for the situation,the teaching method of Cooperative Learning that is helpful to arouse students' interest in English learning and carry out classroom activities in large classes,greatly improving the students' classroom participation can effectively compensate for the above shortages.The new curriculum reform standard(2001)explicitly advocates the cooperative teaching pattern.Under the guidance of teachers,students can achieve teaching goals through their own perception,experience,practice and participation in a cooperative way.The characteristics of Cooperative Learning makes it conform to the needs of new curriculum standard,because Cooperative Learning under the guidance of teaching can fully reflect the students' dominant status,help students learn new knowledge with interest,eventually improve the quality of English reading teaching.In order to more effectively prove the efficiency of Cooperative Learning in English reading,the author puts forward an experimental research.The research period is from September to December,2016,in a rural high school of Guizhou.During the experimental study,four research instruments are used: test(pre-test,post-test),students' interview,classroom observation,and questionnaire.The main experimental way is to divide the two teaching classes into an experimental class and a control classes.The teacher makes use of contrast teaching,which means Cooperative Learning is used in the experimental class and traditional teaching way is used in the comparative class.It can more visually highlight the efficiency of Cooperative Learning in English reading teaching.After three months' action research,the following three research questions are solved : 1.Can Cooperative Learning be more effective than Traditional Teaching in improving students' reading achievement ? 2.Can Cooperative Learning arise students' learning interest ? 3.Can Cooperative Learning help students to form good learning strategies and habits ?However,during the experiment there are some limitations--the limited experiment time,the small number of researching subjects,the unexpected class performance of students and so on,so further study is needed to deal with the mentioned limitations.
