English reading teaching has always been the important part in English teaching for a long time in senior high school. But with the diversification of education and the update of education concept, reading teaching has met a great challenge, in which the traditional teaching mode could not satisfy the need of education. So it’s important to modify the old teaching method of reading and find out new ones which are suitable for modern students and teachers. Cooperative Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that makes learners cooperatively involved in learning in groups, which is a new attempt in foreign language teaching.In this research, the author applies cooperative learning approach to the reading teaching and the study is mainly aimed at investigating the following questions:(1) Can Cooperative Learning improve students’English reading achievements?(2) Can Cooperative Learning enhance students’ interest in English reading?(3) Can cooperative learning narrow the nap between high achievement and weak achievement students?The paper is an empirical research, in which the author investigated2common classes of110students who are in Grade Two from a key high school in Hebei province. The study lasted for5months. In order to check the effects of Cooperative Learning on students’ reading ability, a pre-test and post-test were conducted to find out the changes in students’ proficiency in reading. Moreover, questionnaires were administered to investigate changes in students’attitudes towards reading and learning, and then the data from the results of the pre-test, post-test and the questionnaires were analyzed and compared.The study has the following major findings:(1) Cooperative Learning can improve students’ reading achievements;(2) Cooperative Learning can improve students’ attitudes and motivation towards English reading and thus enhance their interest in English reading;(3) Cooperative Learning can narrow the nap between high achievement students and weak achievement students in reading comprehension. The experiment shows that Cooperative Learning is very efficient to English reading teaching. This study has practical guiding significance for high school English reading teaching.
