In China,the traditional product approach still plays an important role in English writing teaching resulting in the low efficiency of writing teaching.Under the circumstance,improving their students' writing competence challenges English teachers in middle school attaching more importance to the teacher written feedback which as a part of the English writing teaching impacts students' writing ability greatly.This research mainly focuses on teacher written feedback trying to make a comparison between teachers and students in terms of the attitudes and preference for the feedback in order to find out the present problems in English writing teaching and give some directions for teachers' feedback practices.The following research results are concluded through the analysis of the research data collected with a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods.In terms of the attitudes,both teachers and students have a positive attitude towards the importance and the degree of detail and satisfaction of teacher written feedback,while for students' mental response,although they admit that they can understand the feedback provided by teachers,students do not tend to reflect on the feedback,which contradicts teachers' idea who are inclined to consider that they will take the feedback seriously.When it comes to the preferences,teachers pay more attention to the accuracy of students' writings,but students would like to receive the feedback for both language form and content.As for the strategies for providing feedback,they both support the idea that all errors need to be corrected,but they have some different opinion on the specific ways of providing feedback.Teachers prefer to offer more direct corrective feedback and little non-corrective feedback.In contrast,moststudents expect to receive the metalinguistic corrective feedback and all kinds of non-corrective feedback.For the evaluation methods,most teachers usually offer scores or grades,which cannot satisfy students who want to get both scores or grades and comments.As to teachers' activities after the feedback,some teachers will make students rewrite their compositions,while students prefer to take notes of the errors.Through the analysis of the results,some problems are found in writing teaching and accordingly some suggestions are proposed to direct the teaching.
