Reading is an important learning activity for middle school students.Exploring the differences between native language reading and English reading is of great value for Chinese middle school students to learn Chinese and English.Therefore,this study adopts the method of experimental research to carry out two eye movement experiments for middle school students by using Tobii T120 eye tracker.The first experiment explored the differences in the middle school students' reading behavior when they read different color texts between Chinese and English.The second experiment explored the differences in the students' reading behavior when reading different textimage layout between Chinese and English.The corresponding experimental results were listed as follow:(1)There are significant differences in the reading behavior between junior school students and high school students when reading the same text.When reading the same material,junior high school students' eye movement indexes were significantly higher than those of high school students',which shows that junior high school students need more reading time and repeated reading than senior high school students.(2)There are significant differences in the students' reading behavior of the same grade when reading different texts.Middle school students' eye movement indexes are significantly less in Chinese reading than that in English reading,which shows that middle school students need more reading time and repeated reading in English reading than that in Chinese reading.(3)The way of Chinese reading in middle school students is scanning,while the way of English reading is linear reading.(4)The inducibility of red has an obvious effect on middle school students' English reading,while it has no effect on Chinese reading.(5)On the whole,color has the same effect on middle school students' reading behavior between the Chinese reading and English reading.Middle school students prefer to read purplearea text,while they remember the contents of the blue-area text better.(6)It helps to reduce repeated reading in Chinese reading when the picture area is located up side of the text area.While it helps to reduce repeated reading in English reading when the picture area is located left side of the text area.(7)Text-image layout has the same effect on middle school students' reading behavior between the Chinese reading and English reading.Middle school students are more concerned about the text area when the text area is located up side of the picture area,while the picture area is preferred by middle school students when the picture area is located up side of the text area.Finally,based on the results,some suggestions are put forward about the design of multimedia learning materials and the basic strategies of guiding students to read effectively.
