Critical thinking has been widely given attention,for it plays an important role in individual development and social development.How to cultivate the individual's critical thinking also has been the practical issues of concern.The common selection in education is to cultivate the critical thinking based on teaching and learning through specific subjects.It has been stipulated in The new English curriculum standard for senior high school(2013)that the English teaching should focus on the ability of acquiring and processing information in English,and the ability to analyze &solve problems in English as well as the critical thinking ability.Reading takes up a large proportion in senior high school English teaching,so the author tries to build the critical reading model in order to improve the students reading ability.Along with the reading stages,there are three stages in the model designed----interpreting the text before critical reading,questioning the text while critical reading,writing after critical reading.This study adopted the approach of action research,combining qualitative research and quantitative research.The author selected a class of the second grade students of LS senior high school in Ningbo studying for a semester.The California critical thinking skills test was used in the pilot study and it was discovered that the students' critical thinking was in a contradictions state.At the same time,the results of critical reading tests and questionnaire for the corresponding critical reading strategies were supplement which suggested that the students' critical reading ability in dire need of training.Three rounds of action research were included in the research phase,respectively training students' critical reading strategies in different reading stages.The results of data analysis show that training students' critical reading ability steps by steps is beneficial,students' critical reading ability was improved greatly.This study aims at providing valuable revelation for senior high school English reading teaching and putting forward some feasible suggestions for students and teachers.
