Reading,as one of the important language skills,has received a great deal of attention in the process of English teaching.It can be considered as the principal part and core of English reading teaching in senior high school,especially where great emphasis is put on cultivating the students' comprehensive language application ability.English reading teaching in China has been influenced by the traditional teaching method for a long period time.It is not an un-common phenomenon that teachers only highlight explanation instead of understanding in reading class.That is,teachers pay utmost attention to explain difficult words,sentences and grammar,however,they neglect understanding the discourse.The majority of students are lack of awareness and perception of discourse organization and main idea.Therefore,it handicaps the improvement of students' reading comprehension ability seriously.With due consideration of the problems existing in the English reading teaching in senior high school,the thesis is based on cohesion theory,and combines cohesion theory with the teaching practice.It discusses the guidance of application of cohesion theory to senior high school English reading teaching.For purpose of exploring some effective ways to improve English reading ability of high school students' in the teaching practice,and providing a new prospective for English reading teaching.And for this,the author carries out a teaching experiment for about a semester.The students are selected from Fuyu No.3 senior high school in Jilin Province.After the experiment,in a bid to verify whether the experiment achieves the expected effect by the comparison,analysis and summary of the experimental data and results.The experiment results show that cohesion theory can perform the guidance and practical significance in terms of cultivating students' reading ability of English reading and improving English reading teaching.Cohesion theory can provide methods and skills for students to solve the difficult problems in the exams.In addition,it can foster students' ability of analyzing the discourse by them,it not only improves the teachers' ability of combing theory with practice effectively,but it provides reference to English reading teaching in senior high school.
