As one of the four basic skills in English,writing is very important.Because of the improvement of writing score in College Entrance Examination in China,writing begins to play a more important role in English teaching.So teachers begin to pay more attention to writing and improve the teaching methods constantly.Problem-based Teaching Approach(PBT)is a problem-solving teaching mode,which is an international popular teaching approach.This mode is based on problems.Students think and solve problems.The purpose is to let students understand,grasp and use knowledge.PBT emphasizes on students,active involvement.Actually it's the process of students' analyzing,thinking,exploring and finally solving the problems.Through problems,thinking,cooperation,evaluation,students complete the task.Thus their writing ability can also be improved.PBT plays a crucial role in building students' autonomous learning ability and awareness of cooperation,cultivating their ability of creativity and building better relationship between teachers and students.This thesis discusses the application of Problem-based Teaching Approach to the English writing.On the basis of understanding Problem-based Teaching Approach and other related writing theories,the author has applied Problem-based Teaching Approach to writing lessons of senior one in Henan Province Ruzhou Middle School from September 2016 to December 2016,aiming at improving students' writing ability.The author guided the students to master the skill of writing in the completing of the various tasks through the five basic processes of PBT:problem situation,problem analysis,problem solving,evaluation,summary and reflection.In order to test the results,the author used the methods of Questionnaire,pre-test and post-test and interview.In the experiment,there are two classes,100 students involved.It mainly solves the following three questions:1.What effects does the application of problem-based teaching approach have on students' English writing scores?2.How does problem-based teaching approach improve students' writing proficiency?3.How can problem-based teaching approach arouse students' writing interest?The author adopts PBT in the real class and experiment.Through previous literature review and questionnaire,it can help the author make the experiment.This thesis is divided into six parts.In the first chapter,the author mainly introduces the background and significance of the research and research methods.The second part is literature review.This chapter describes the previous researches on Problem-based Teaching Approach abroad and at home.The third part explains the definition and structure of PBT,and the key concepts of PBT.The fourth part is the main part of the paper.It applies PBT to the real experiment,including the purpose,methods,subjects and procedure of the research.The fifth chapter is about data analysis which comes from pre-test,post test,questionnaire and interview of the experiment.The last part is the conclusion and suggestions.By doing and analyzing the experiment,we can conclude that Problem-based Teaching Approach can improve students'writing ability.After the experiment,the average scores of the experimental class have been improved a lot.Many students are able to have good scores of writing.And many students have mastered the skills of writing.They know how to write an article well.During the class,they cooperate with each other to solve the problems.They find that writing class is more and more interesting and attractive.It is very helpful to improve their writing ability.Therefore,the result of the research proved that to some degree,Problem-based Teaching Approach to writing can stimulate students' enthusiasm of writing and increase their writing ability.
