The National English Curriculum for Compulsory Education(2011 version)points out that the English teaching of the primary schools should cultivate students' understanding of pictures and words.Students are required to guess the story's general meaning through simple words and pictures.Therefore,we know that teachers should pay more attention to cultivating students' English reading ability at primary schools.However,the problems such as lacking of proper English reading materials have not been solved,which have affected students' English reading ability to a certain extent.In addition,all the students start to learn English in the third grade at primary schools.And the early English learning is still a new and interesting thing for students.However,with the deepening of learning,students lose their interest gradually.In recent years,the picture-book reading is used widely in China and gets good results.Therefore,the study applied the picture-books to English class based on cognitive-development theory and intuitive teaching theory,and explored the influence of picture-book reading on English reading interest and ability of the primary school students.A twenty-week teaching experiment was done by the author.The subjects of this study were 120 students in Class 3 and Class 4 in Grade 4 from Yingcai Campus of Tengzhou No.4 Experimental Primary School.Class 3 was the experimental class and Class 4 was the control class.The experimental class mainly used the English textbook and Emma's Magic English was used as auxiliary teaching material;the control class just used the English textbook.The main research methods of this experiment were tests,questionnaires and interviews.The results of the experiment were analyzed by SPSS system.This study answered two questions:1.Can the use of the English picture-books arouse the students' interest in English reading?2.Can the use of the English picture-books improve the students' ability in English reading?The research shows that English picture-books reading can not only arouse the students' interest in English reading,but also improve their English reading ability.
