In the educational background of the Experimental Primary School Affiliated to Guiyang Normal School,the author of this thesis works as an English teacher,English as a subject is offered to Grade 1 and the author was assigned to teach the grade in September,2016.The learners aged 6 or 7 did not learn Chinese Pinyin or could not read or write in Chinese,not to mention anything about English that was totally new to them.It could be predicted that they would feel confused between English Alphabets and Chinese Pinyin if they were required to learn both at the same time.The problem the author was encountered with was how to get the young learners in Grade 1 to learn English,like English,have interest in English and experience the happiness of learning English.All these problems mentioned above triggered the author's motivation to do an action research.This research was aimed to stimulate the young learners' interest in English and a sense of achievement in English learning,enhance their self-confidence and lay a foundation for building up the ideal English-self in future through drama performance.This research was done under the theoretical framework of Affective Filter Hypothesis and Interest,Critical Period Hypothesis,Foreign Language Pronunciation Self-Concept and Discourse and Context and with the reference to the relevant studies home and abroad.As an action research,one-semester teaching plan was made with a series of action on a focus of creating the context of English play of a fairy story to teach the young learners in English classroom.The findings of this research have showed,firstly,the teaching English on the basis of text drama achieved its teaching objectives in listening and speaking.Through performance,the learners experienced and knew something about a different culture and expressions in a different language.The context of the play changed the abstract words into the concrete items and acting through English songs and performance in the play.This method fit up with the young learners' cognition;secondly,DIE facilitated the students to have the positive affect in learning interest in English and self-confidence.It is the good beginning to establish the goodpronunciation image for the young learners to mold the ideal English self in future.So this teaching of drama performance was favorable to meet the students' affect and cognitive needs.The students were delighted to learn English through performance.They acquired positive experience and feelings by playing the social roles in the play.It has demonstrated that drama performance help the learners to attain the affect objective in English teaching in Grade 1 of the primary school.The implications of the research are as follows:DIE is the flexible dynamic teaching process,teachers should think about the distance between the teaching goal and the students' learning difficulty.It is necessary to have constant adjustment of the teaching objectives,teaching ways according to reflections on teaching performances so as to reach the teaching goals.Based on the individual teaching practice and experience,the teachers should keep up study and professional development,by referring to the theories and principles as the basis of teaching design and make further exploration to DIE for bettering English learning effects.
