VLSI Design Of MQ Encoder For JPEG2000

Since the communication bandwidth and the storage are limited,the transmission for large images is slow and difficult.To solve this problem,image compression coding is important.Arithmetic coding is an important entropy coding.Compared with Huffman coding,arithmetic coding behaves superior compression performance,and is widely used in video compression and still image compression standard.JPEG2000 is a new generation of static image compression standard,it has excellent compression performance,and has been widely used.MQ encoder is a context-based binary arithmetic coder in JPEG2000.Since the algorithm of the MQ encoder is complex,MQ encoder has become the bottleneck of JPEG2000.Firstly,this paper briefly introduces JPEG2000 coding system and arithmetic coding.Secondly,we elaborate the algorithm of MQ encoding in JPEG2000.Then,based on MQ encoding algorithm,we proposed two MQ encoder architecture.They are pass-parallel MQ encoder and standard serial MQ encoder,in which,the pass-parallel MQ encoder can encode(CX,D)pairs from the mixed three encoding passes.These two MQ encoder architecture is described with Verilog HDL,and is simulated using Modelsim,the compressed bit-stream generated by proposed architectures is compared with that of JasPer.Simulation result shows that proposed MQ encoder generates exactly the same bit stream as JasPer.Proposed MQ encoder are synthesized on a Xilinx FPGA,they can achieve a throughput of 139.085 Msymbols/sec and 251.95 Msymbols/sec separately.Finally,we built an embedded verificaton system on EDK.Since the embeded system synthesis results and the simulation results are the same,proposed MQ encoder can encode(CX,D)correctly on FPGA.
